Missing the children in Ghana

It is hard to believe that in five short months I have the opportunity to go back to Ghana for the 3rd annual Art and Music Camp at the Village of Hope! I am trying my best to save up enough money to go back and see those amazing children that I miss so much. I received five letters from the children a few weeks ago that really brightened my day! It has been hard for me working at the Family and Children's Center with teenage boys who have emotional and behavioral problems. I miss working with young children and part of my heart is still in Africa with those Ghanaian orphans. God is good...He knows my heart, and I know He will provide again like He did last summer. Right now God has been teaching me to wait on Him and His perfect timing.

As much as I want to go back to Africa and care for the orphan children in Ghana, God has me where I'm at right now for a reason. I might not know the reason why, but I can trust the One who holds my future.

ARTIST STATEMENT

“When a story is told, it is not forgotten. It becomes something else, the memory of who we were; the hope of what we can become.”

The inspiration for my artwork originated from my travels to Ghana, West Africa, where I spent time with hundreds of precious children at the Village of Hope Orphanage. The Lord has placed a burden on my heart to return to Ghana in full time ministry as well as tell these children’s stories through portraiture.

The larger-than-life black and white conte portraits of the Ghanaian orphans each have a unique story to tell. This story is one of freedom and incredible hope following their rescue from present-day child slavery and suffering. I believe each child was created for a purpose: to reflect the beauty of Creator God and ultimately give Him glory. Each portrait seeks to capture this beauty expressed through the child’s spirit of joy and hope in the Lord. Through portraiture, I further desire to be a voice for the voiceless children and to raise awareness of the ongoing problem of child trafficking on Lake Volta in Ghana where seven to ten thousand children are currently in slavery.

The children’s stories represented by these portraits are only the beginning of the grand story the Lord is creating with each young life, a story full of hope, healing, and tremendous purpose.
