Nyame Ba (God's Child)

Kelly and I with all the girls in their holiday wear.
They were so happy with their beautiful dresses!
I love these girls!

The local language in Kumasi is Twi (pronounced tree), and the children taught me that Nyame Ba means God’s child.  One of God’s precious children that I have the joy of spending time with is Emefa.  She is 12 years old and in class 5 at Joy Standard School.  When she grows up she would like to be a nurse.  Emefa also loves the Lord and wants to follow Him.  One afternoon, Emefa opened up to me and asked if she could be baptized.  She is now one of the 17 children in our baptism class and will be baptized in March when Ma Pam’s team comes.  Ma Pam rescued Emefa from a life of slavery along with her 2 younger brothers, Felix and Freeman.  Emefa is now free and knows the One who can rescue her from her sins, Jesus Christ.  Through Christ, Emefa has true freedom!

Emefa

In my Saturday morning class with the girls, the first TRUTH that we discussed and drew in the Art TRUTH Journals was John 1:12: “Yet to those who received Him, to those who believed in is name, He gave the right to become children of God.”  Emefa is God’s child and wants to publicly confess Jesus as her Lord and Savior through baptism in March.  Emefa is such a sweet and gentle young woman with a very tender heart that is sensitive to the Lord’s voice.  She is carefully listening to the Lord’s calling to surrender her life to Christ.  She loves to sing and often leads my girls’ class with a song before we begin our time together.  Her voice is a sweet sweet sound to the Lord, and you will often find her singing songs of praise throughout the day.

Silhouette Project

Over the past few weeks the kids have been working on an autobiographical silhouette.  I traced the children’s profiles onto a large piece of paper and had them brainstorm on a sheet of paper what they would like to include on their silhouette.  I explained how they could use words and drawings to fill their self-portraits with what they like and qualities that define themselves.  I gave them some guiding questions to get them thinking of what they could include like favorite animals, food, subjects in school, and what they want to be in the future.  The kids particularly enjoyed getting their silhouettes traced and seeing their own as well as each other’s profile.  When the kids finished their silhouettes, I had them each come up and share their artwork with the class and tell why they filled their silhouettes with certain words and drawings.

Take a look at their fun and creative silhouettes…
